Aghada Ladies Football Notes

Aghada Minor Ladies Take County “B” Title after Thriller…
Aghada 3-08 Carrigaline 2-08

Last week when the U-16’s won their County title we spoke about heart and determination, well the Minors produced the exact same thing on Sunday last when they overcame Carrigaline in a thrilling County “B” Final on a scorline of Aghada 3-8 Carrigaline 2-8. This was a tough game of ladies football played in testing conditions. The seaside girls opened the scoring with a well taken point from the boot of Nessa Fitzpatrick. Carrigaline hit right back with a point of their own before Lauren Linehan had our second point of the match after Sarah Leahy won a wonderful ball at midfield to put her through. Aileen Mc Grath kicked a right beauty from the right hand side after a great pass from Christine Moran. Fitzpatrick kicked the next score for the seaside girls before the Carrigaline girls powered into the game and kicked the next five points to leave the score at the short whistle Aghada 0-4 Carrigaline 0-6.

The second half wasn’t seven minutes old when the Carrig girls hit the back of the net but seconds later the seaside girls responded with a point to keep them in touch from the boot of Linehan. Aine Mc Grath and Mary Leahy were introduced for Ciara Counihan and Ciara Mc Grath and this brought new life to the Aghada outfit but before they could settle Carrigaline delivered a sucker punch for the seaside girls when the Mid Cork representatives got in for their second goal and all of a sudden they were eight points up with twenty minutes to play, but in fairness to the Aghada girls they dug deep and showed some heart and determination to take the game to Carrig. Linehan got a point back before Clare Walsh rattled the back of the Carrig net after a great pass from Lauren Mc Allister. This brought the game back to a more manageable four points defecate.

Carrigaline got the next score which was to be their last before Linehan and Mc Grath bought it back to a three point game with five to play. The seaside girls were now playing some wonderful confident football and worked the ball well up the field and within a five minute period delivered two knock out blows when captain fantastic Sorcha Phelan hit the back of the net not once but twice to put Aghada three up at the most important time of the game with time almost up. Carrigaline pushed hard for that equalizing score but with Kate Wall, Sarah Walsh, Aine Mc Grath, Sophie Long, Bridget Wall and Eva Rose Boylan marshalling the defense it was to be the seaside girl’s day, crowning a tremendous week for Aghada Ladies Football.
After the match the cup was presented to team captain Sorcha Phelan by Barry Moran registrar of the Cork County Ladies Football Board who thanked both sides for their part in one of the best games of football at minor level all year.
Sorcha thanked the referee for his handling of the game, the supporters for turning up in such large numbers & Carrigaline for contributing to a thrilling game of ladies football,
She also thanked Anne Marie Mc Allister, Máire Mc Grath & Elaine Counihan for the work they do in the background and the stand in management team of Cathal Cronin, Cathal Mc Allister and Rosin Phelan. She also thanked the manager of the team Conor Counihan who unfortunately couldn’t make the game due to plans that couldn’t be undone. The team then returned in convoy to the clubhouse in Rostellan for some well earned refreshments.
Many thanks you to all the parents who bought sandwiches, cakes and biscuits, and refreshments back to the GAA club Rooms very much appreciated?
Thanks to all the girls who played their hearts out all year not just the girls who were lucky enough to play in the final but everyone who played in the earlier rounds and trained so hard. That is what it is all about playing for the team and being part of the team. Well done and thanks to all.
