Aghada and Kinsale must do it all over again

Aghada 4-4 Kinsale 1-13

Aghada and Kinsale played out a thrilling draw in the Cork County U16 “A” Final on Saturday last in Mayfield. It was end to end stuff in difficult underfoot conditions. Kinsale were a big strong physical size and it took the Aghada girls time to settle into the game. Kinsale opened the scoring after the first minute with a well taken point. Mary Leahy responded two minutes later when she rattled the back of the Kinsale net. It was the first of Mary’s four goals as she ran the show. Kinsale hit a purple patch of their own then and had six unanswered scores to leave the score after twenty seven minutes Aghada 1-0 Kinsale 1-6 but up popped Mary again to bag her second goal as she was beginning to become a thorn in Kinsale’s side. Kinsale got one more score before the short whistle to leave the halftime score Aghada 2-0 Kinsale 1-7.
After a poor enough opening from the seaside girls they were still in the game. Aghada got the first score of the second half from the boot of Lauren Mc Allister but Kinsale came again and got the next three points in a row. Other teams might have let their heads drop at this stage but not these Aghada girls they found the heart and belief to drive on and not to let this game slip away from them. Olivia Dzjack in goals and all Aghada’s six backs rose their game and started to move the ball with a bit more ease. Up popped Mary Leahy for her third goal quickly followed by a point from Lauren Linehan and all of a sudden there was only point in the game with ten minutes to play. Aghada were now starting to break down the Kinsale defence but were reduced to fourteen players when Clare Walsh was sin binned.
When Aghada were reduced to fourteen players the girls really lifted their game and Mary was to get her fourth goal to put Aghada two points clear with ten to play. It was frantic stuff from here to the end. Kinsale got the next two scores to level up the match and with the clock heading for sixty minutes Kinsale took the lead but there was one more kick left in the seaside girls and up popped the player of the match Mary Leahy to level the game, to leave the final score Aghada 4-4 Kinsale 1-13. Great credit is due to every girl for the way they dug deep when other teams might have dropped their heads. If they can bring this type of attitude to the replay we will have a different ball game. We have to mention Mary Leahy for the outstanding performance she gave in this game. It was worth the entry fee alone. Replay date and time TBC.
