East Cork U14 Championship Quarter Final
Lisgoold/Leamlara played St. Nicks in the East Cork U14 Championship Quarter Final on Thursday 15th September. Lisgoold/Leamlara having had a long summer of training had not played a competitive fixture since April so were a bit rusty. In saying that, they opened the score sheet with a point and scored a further 2 points within 5 minutes to set the tone for the game. But before Lisgoold/Leamlara had time to get into more of a flow, St. Nicks went up the field and although denied on a few occasions by our backs and a few excellent saves made by the keeper, St Nicks registered 3 goals in the first half. Before half time, Lisgoold/Leamlara did show a few sparks of what they are capable of, when they worked the ball up along the wings and into the space created, to allow them to get in for a goal and a well taken point but it was St Nicks who were ahead at the break, 3-01 to 1-04.
St Nicks took charge again at the start of the second half, managing to get a goal and a point to go 7 points ahead. With our heads a little down, Lisgoold/Leamlara knew that they had it in them to play better and take this game to St Nicks. A positional switch in full forward proved a good move for Lisgoold/Leamlara, as we scored 2 points and a goal to narrow the gap to just 2 points. Things began to change in favour of Lisgoold/Leamlara as their goalie made more good saves to prevent the scoreboard changing. Our backs tightened up the marking and began to attack the ball by getting in front of their players. Winning the primary ball allowed them to play good passes up the pitch to our mid-field and half-forwards who were getting in good positions on the wings.
With a new since of determination and belief Lisgoold/Leamlara slowly clawed back score after score, to eventually push past St Nicks and for the first time since the beginning of the game, and took the lead. Further changes to the Lisgoold/Leamlara team aided to 3 goals and a further point being scored to ensure that Lisgoold/Leamlara progress to the Semi Final. Thanks to the referee and all involved in St Nicks for their involvement in an excellent game of football. Well done to Lisgoold/Leamlara who never gave up until the very end, finishing 9 points ahead, having been down 7 during at the start of the second half. We are so proud of all of the girls and their efforts. Final score 5-08 to 4-02. Well done. We would also like to wish U14 Trainer Edel O Riordan all the best on her imminent move to Dublin.
