Cork Ladies’ Footballers Make Winning Start To Munster Championship

Cork Ladies’ Football senior team (Sponsored by SuperValu) looked well in their new Kit as they took to the field at Fermoy in the opening round of this years Munster championship to take on near neighbours Waterford on Saturday last
This was a very interesting tie as Cork who are the reigning All Ireland senior champions and national league division 1 winners faced a young Waterford side that are reining All Ireland Intermediate champions and national League division 3 winners. Watched by a good sized crowd it was the Waterford Ladies who opened the better and looked good in the opening quarter but a goal from Aine O’ Sullivan mid way through the first half set up Cork to lead at the break by 1-06 to 0-05. Both sides looked tired in the second period and were guilty of some terrible wides and while the Deise ladies did trouble Cork at times the senior champions seemed to have a small bit in reserve and eventually won out on a score line 1-10 to 0-07.
The side was led by Deirdre O’ Reilly in the absence of injured captain Ciara O’ Sullivan and from an East Cork perspective Roisin Phelan, Annie Walsh, Orlagh Farmer and Hannah Looney all played solidly and it was also great to see Aishling Hutchens (Fermoy) and Emma Farmer (Aghada) also making an appearance as both of these girls have a wealth of experience and their talent could add greatly to the Cork scoring power.
Cork now face Kerry in Round two next weekend with the Munster final fixed for July 10th
Cork U 14 Girls
The Cork U 14 squad took part in the National U 14 Blitz in Portlaoise on Saturday last
The Cork girls are all ready out of this years Championship having been defeated by Kerry and Tipperary so this was an oppertunity to give all the squad members a chance to play at inter-county level. In the end Cork failed to progress from their groups but enjoyed the day out as Tipperary defeated Kerry in the Final.
