No Joy for Cork U 14 Girls in Munster Ladies’ Football Final

Kerry 1-12 Cork 0-08

Kerry retained their U 14 ladies Football Munster crown with a comfortable win over Cork in the final played in a sun drenched Mallow on Sunday last. The girls from the Kingdom started strongly and raced into a 4 points to one lead after only six minutes but slowly and surely the Cork girls got well into the game. Unfortunately, Cork squandered many scoreable chances and failure to take points in the first half would prove very costly. They were also very unlucky as they hit the crossbar and uprights on several occasion and it would not have taken much to swing this tie. As it was Kerry led by 2 at the break 7 points to 5.

The second period started at a hectic pace with the Kerry center field pairing playing out of their skins and giving some lovely ball to the forward line. The Cork backs did some fine work holding the opposition at bay but Corks failure to score during this first period of the second half again did not help their cause. Kerry were 5 points up before Cork started the come back with a point in the 51st minute and the young rebeletts put up a brave performance narrowing the gap just to 3 points and once again were denied by the woodwork. Kerry backs led by player of the match Lily O’ Brien were outstanding during this period and Cork try as they might could not get through for the goal they so desperately needed.

This game had a considerable number of stoppages and it was during added on time that Kerry put daylight between the sides with a great goal and some well taken points to run out easy and deserving victors on a scoreline 1-12 to 0-08

After the presentation of the cup the Kerry manager led his team to shake hands with every member of the Cork squad in a wonderful display of sportsmanship
