Double Delight for Aghada Ladies Football
By Aghada Ladies’ Football PRO Cathal McAllister

Two teams at either end of the scales made history on Sunday when the U-12’s won the County “C” Championship and the juniors won the Junior County League…

Aghada 2-12 Donoughmore 0-06
The U-12’s made history when they became the 5th Aghada U-12 team to win a County Championship in a row defeating Donoughmore on Sunday at a sun drenched Mayfield venue.
This was a good game of ladies football with both teams giving their all in the search for glory. The seaside girls were very quick to settle and took the game to Donoughmore. The game wasn’t a minute old when Rachel Leahy had Aghada’s first point. This was quickly followed by two more from the boot of Kaitlin Smith and another from Rachel before Rachel rattled the back of the Donoughmore net and the seaside girls had the dream start leading 1-4 to 0-0 after six minutes. Donoughmore got a point of their own before Hazel Walley rattled the back of the Donoughmore net for the seaside girl’s second goal. Donoughmore were then awarded a penalty but the resultant kick hit the post and went wide, a let off for the seaside girls. Donoughmore were starting to come into the game now and started to put pressure on the Aghada defence. A long ball into the Aghada square was heading for the net only for Aoibhin Robinson to pull off a wonderful save. Hazel and Rachel were to score again to leave the score at the short whistle Aghada 2-8 Donoughmore 0-2.
Scores dried up a bit in the second half for Aghada as Donoughmore started to mount more pressure on the Aghada defence. Sally O’Connor was to get the seaside girls next score after thirty nine minutes and Aghada wouldn’t register another score until the fifty third minute but in the intervening period it was the Aghada backs that came to the fore with some tremendous defending keeping the Donoughmore forwards at bay. From the fifty third minute till the end of the game it was all Aghada with scores from Hazel, Rachel and Danielle Savage to leave the full time score Aghada 2-12 Donoughmore 0-6 and the seaside girls were crowned County U-12 “C” Champions 2016.
There were scenes of great jubilation as players, parents, guardians, grandparents and supporters celebrated this great win. The cup was presented to Rachel Leahy by John Kelleher President of the Cork Ladies Football Board… Rachel thanked Donoughmore for the wonderful game, the referee for his handling of the game, Mayfield for the use of their field and last but not least the management team of Eric Smith, Eoin O’Neill, Mick Boylan, Jason Ryan, Marie Mc Grath and Claire Robinson.
Panel: A. Robinson, R. Warne, E. Lewis, C. French, C. Boylan, L. O’Neill, E. Burke, R. Leahy (Captain), M. Mc Grath, M. Collins, K. Smith, E. Moynihan, K. Curtin, H. Walley, R. O’Callaghan, B. Smith, I. Barry, C. Fitzgibbon, D. Savage, J. O’Callaghan, K McInnis and S. O’Connor.

Next up in the double header were the junior ladies in the replay of the County League Final against Bishopstown. If the drawn game was anything to go by this had the makings of a thriller but in the end it was Aghada who cruised home and captured the 2016 Junior League title. Just like the U-12 game it was the seaside girls who were quickest out of the blocks with scores from the boot of Emma Farmer and Moiré Mc Govern. On six minutes against the run of play Bishopstown rattled the back of the Aghada net. This was quickly cancelled out by Emma and Moiré who kicked two more points for the seaside girls before play was held up for about five minutes as Moiré and a Bishopstown player collided with both players having to leave the field of play. Hannah Looney was introduced for the injured Moiré. Emma was to get Aghada’s next two points before Hannah rifled the ball to the top corner of the Bishopstown net. Again against the run of play Bishopstown got in for their second goal to leave the halftime score Aghada 1-8 Bishopstown 2-0.

Aghada introduced Clare Walsh for Laura Burchill and Aileen Mc Grath for Ciara Mc Grath at the start of the second half. On thirty nine minutes a super save from Bridget Wall at one end led to a beautiful point at the other end from the boot of Emma. From here to the end it was all Aghada and the score of the match was to come on the forty fifth minute after some tremendous inter-play out the field between Sarah Leahy, Sarah Walsh, Aileen Mc Grath and Lauren Mc Allister, left the easiest of goals for Emma to score. Amanda Bennett and Nessa Fitzpatrick were introduced for Sarah Walsh and Lauren Mc Allister. Aileen chipped in with a point of her own before Hannah finished the scoring for the seaside girls to leave the final score Aghada 2-17 Bishopstown 2-4.
The cup was presented to Aghada captain Karen O’Connell by Barry Moran on behalf of the County Board.
Karen thanked Bishopstown for the wonderful game and also had great praise for her own team mates who she said worked very hard for this cup. She thanked the team management of Brian Leamy, Pa Farmer, Ian Rose, Reece Bawden and Jennifer Lewis and finally asked for “three chips” but quickly corrected herself and asked for three cheers for the Bishopstown team.

After two very entertaining games of football is was back to the clubhouse in Rostellan for some very well earned refreshments. We would like to thank the parents and players who supplied sandwiches, cakes and biscuits for both teams. It was absolutely fantastic to see both the U-12’s and juniors mixing together. a sign of a strong family club. Well done one and all…
