U16s Crowned East Cork League Champions
On a glorious sunny evening in Magners Hill our U16s took on Carrigtwohill in the 2016 East Cork D League Final. After a previous league meeting back in April and recent Junior clashes in which the Carrig girls came out as victors by single scores we knew that this game would go down to the wire. Both teams gave a terrific exhibition of Ladies Football with goal to goal non stop action which necessitated many water breaks throughout the game in the hot and humid conditions.
With both defences well on top scores were at a premium in the first half in which the Youghal ladies lead by 0-3 to 0-2 at half time. Carrig came out in the 2nd half and with a slight breeze to their backs quickly ate into the Youghal lead to go ahead 0-4 0-3. With both sets of supporters getting behind their teams Youghal scored 2 quick goals to put them in the driving seat with 15 minutes left to play. Carrig didn’t give up and drove at the Youghal defense to score 1-1 to leave all present on tender hooks as the clock ticked down. At the final whistle there were jubilant scenes as the Youghal girls banished the ghosts of previous near misses in both league and championship finals.
Both teams were complimented by East Cork Board Secretary Philip Harrington on a terrific game who then presented Youghal captain Alice Flavin with the trophy in front of jubilant players and supporters. Next up is the County championship at the end of August where both teams could meet again as they both go through and represent East Cork. Commiserations to Carrig who contributed to a fantastic game. To all of the Youghal panel well done on bringing this title to the club and for all of your efforts in training over the past few weeks, it paid off in the end.
