County Junior Division 4 A League Final
Aghada and Bishopstown Must Do It All Again…
Aghada 1-11 Bishopstown 3-05
Aghada and Bishopstown must do all over again after finishing level in this entertaining Cork County Junior League Final played in Mayfield. Aghada opened the brighter team and took the game to the Bishopstown girls. The Aghada girls had the lion’s share of position in the first quarter but were finding scores hard to come by. In this quarter Aghada had three points on the board a pair from the boot of Emma Farmer and one from Christine Moran. After dominating for so long early on it was not a great return and some poor wides could of come back to haunt them later on. Aghada were then caught with a sucker punch from Bishopstown after they worked the ball up to the field to rattle the back of the Aghada net. A minute later the second sucker punch arrived when a Bishopstown girl was upended in the square. The resultant penalty was stopped by keeper Bridget Wall but on the rebound they again rattled the back of the Aghada net. This didn’t deter the Aghada girls much and they got the next two scores of the match one from Sorcha Phelan and another from the boot of Emma Farmer, sandwiched between a point for Bishopstown to leave the score at the short whistle Aghada 0-6 Bishopstown 2-1.
On the turnaround Bishopstown started this half the brighter and had two points in quick succession to go three clear. Then a well worked moved from out the field saw Emma Farmer rattle the back of the Bishopstown net to tie up the game. It was a ding dong battle from here to the end. Bishopstown again took the lead after forty minutes play only to be pegged back again, with a well taken point again from the boot of Emma Farmer. Aghada then pushed in front again this time from the boot of Sarah Leahy who kicked a wonderful score from thirty meters out. Bishopstown upped the anti once more but a brilliant save from Bridget Wall kept them at bay. Emma Farmer pointed again to push the Aghada girl’s two points clear with eight to play. Bishopstown were not going to lie down and came at the Aghada girls again. They moved the ball up the line and what looked like a charge on Christine Moran was ruled OK by the referee and it led to a goal for Bishopstown to push then one clear going down the straight. Could the Aghada girls respond was the question and they duly did, with Lauren Mc Allister levelling the game and Emma Farmer putting Aghada one up with two minutes to play, but as this ding dong battle went down to the wire, Bishopstown levelled the game with time almost up. There was one last bit of drama when the ball was pumped into the Bishopstown square and the in running Megan Sweeney just missed out on it when she was just beaten to the ball by the Bishopstown keeper to bring this entertaining game to an end. It probably should have went to extra time as with fixtures now coming thick and fast we are not sure when this game will be replayed. Overall a great performance from the Aghada girls. Final score Aghada 1-11 Bishopstown 3-5.
