Aghada Ladies’ Football Minor team make history & finish the year in style.
East Cork Minor “A” Championship Final Aghada 3-12 Fermoy 5 -03
Tuesday night saw the conclusion of the East Cork Minor “A”championship when Aghada travelled to Fermoy to play them in their home ground. After the disappointment of loosing the county “A” final the previous Saturday night it was hard to lift the spirits so soon but fair play to the Minor ladies, they did the parish proud, and brought home the East Cork Minor “A” cup for the first time in their history.
Playing with the aid of a very strong wind the Aghada girls found it hard to convert the scores and managed just a few points in the opening quarter from Amanda Bennett and Máire McGovern A long range goal and two points from Christine Moran seemed to settle them but Fermoy, who are always tremendous competitors, hit back with two goals and two points of their own to narrow the gap. Aileen McGrath continued her scoring spree of late and had the ball in the opposition’s net just on the stroke of half time to leave Aghada leading on a score line 2-07 to 2-02 at the break.
In the second half the sea side girls were playing into the wind and began to play some great team football with Caoilinn Hickey and Hannah Rose coming into their own in the centre of the park distributing the ball well to Ciara McGrath Jodie Rose and Sarah Walsh, Christine Moran capped an outstanding evening when she hit the back of the net for her second goal mid way through the half and it looked as if the Aghada ladies would pull away. Fermoy, to their credit, had other ideas and hit back with two break away goals of their own. It took some great play from the Aghada backs and in particular the half back line of Sorcha Phelan, Sarah Leahy & Sophie Long to keep them at bay. Aghada kept picking off the points when the opportunity arose and it was just as well as Fermoy scored their fifth goal in the dying moments of the match to narrow the gap to just three points.
Aghada pulled everyone back and Bridget Wall in goals was super as she marshaled the troops and with Ciara Counihan, Sinead O’ Driscoll and Cassie Tynan standing firm they managed to keep Fermoy out and see Aghada over the finishing line.
This was a great team performance with everyone playing their part showing exactly what it meant to be a team player and put on the green jersey and represent Aghada. Well done to all the girls who turned out on Tuesday and thanks to the management team for their work during the season.
Barry Moran PRO of the East Cork Ladies Football Board thanked both sides for a tremendously exciting game of football and said there was a great sporting history between both clubs as they have marvelous respect for each other. He also thanked the Referee AJ Cronin and Fermoy GAA for the use of their field so late in the season. He then presented the cup to Amanda Bennett captain of the victorious Aghada team.

So the curtain falls on another great year for the Aghada club. Playing in five county finals, winning just one, but getting down to the last two in the county at any grade is a great achievement. Aghada also won East Cork titles at U-12, U-14, U-16 and Minor, two of which were “A” grade and full filled all fixtures at every grade from U-8 and U -10 up to Junior and had a lot of fun a long the way as it is not all about winning.
Well done and thanks to everybody both on and off the field
