Fermoy Cubs v Midleton

Fermoy U14 cubs played their first league game of the season at home on Sunday 3rd March against a strong Midleton side, and led by a goal at half time after a fantastic first half performance.

During the first ten minutes of the game, Fermoy took advantage of loose marking in the Midleton half, and cranked up the pressure.  Any Midleton counter-attack was being dealt with efficiently at the back and in midfield, with both Alison Flynn and Maeve O’Callaghan anticipating the opposition moves well.  Caoimhe Twomey also stood strong against the Midleton forwards, protecting her goalkeeper.  In fact, both goalkeepers were relatively untroubled for the first fifteen minutes or so, until the first Fermoy point was kicked after a sustained attack and a couple of 45s.

Midleton struck back with a point almost immediately, finding a way through the organised defence.  However, Fermoy always threatened a goal, which duly came when Liadh Carroll kicked home after an intelligent move across the goalmouth.   All the Fermoy players supported each other throughout the half, and held off the opposition until the break.  Half-time: Fermoy 1-1, Midleton 0-1.

Within minutes of the re-start  Liadh Carroll grabbed another well-taken point for Fermoy.  At this stage, Midleton slowly edged back into the game with two quick goals.  Fermoy managed to contain them a little, but the damage was being done.  Midleton ended the game on 4-2 to Fermoy’s 1-2.  However, this was a fine first competitive performance by a hard-working Fermoy cubs team, which will undoubtedly grow in strength and confidence throughout the season.
