Aghada lose out in East Cork League final
After a great league campaign Aghada just came up short in the final against Glanmire last week. Aghada opened well and led at half time but three goals in five minutes after the resumption left a mountain to climb for the sea side girls and unfortunately they just could not get a grip on the game with Glanmire running out easy winners. It is highly likely that these two sides will meet again in the county championship or the East Cork Championship later in the season so watch this space.
After a weeks break the Aghada girls bounced back with a comprehensive win over St. Val’s in the “A” County ¼ Final on Friday night last at a splendid Kilmurry venue. The seaside girls were very quick to settle into this game and were on the scoreboard early on with goals from Aileen Mc Grath and Lauren Linehan. St. Val’s managed to get two points of their own before Aileen was on hand again to rattle the back of the St. Val’s net. Sarah Walsh chipped in with a well taken point after great interplay out the field between Clare Walsh, Sarah Leahy and Amy Hickman to leave the score after the first quarter Aghada 3-2 St. Val’s 0-2. Lauren Mc Allister and Sarah Walsh added more points for the seaside girls before St. Val’s hit a purple patch of their own and hit three unanswered points in a row, only for some wonderful defending from Katie O’Farrell, Bridget Wall, Ayrn Quinn and Olivia Dyjak who pulled off some wonderful saves the outcome might had been different. The half time score line read Aghada 3-8 St. Val’s 0-5. The seaside girls were quick out of the blocks again on the resumption, with an early goal again from the boot of Aileen Mc Grath. St. Val’s hit back with a goal of their own only to be quickly cancelled out by three points, two from the boot of Megan Sweeney and the other from Eva Rose Boylan. From here to the end it was all Aghada. A great rob from Sally Mc Allister on the St. Val’s player left Sarah Walsh through for a goal, quickly followed by another from Mary Leahy and Lauren Mc Allister to leave the final score Aghada 8-15 St. Val’s 2-6. We now await the winners of Knocknagree and Glanmire in the Semi Final. Panel: O. Dyjak, K. O’Farrell, B. Wall, A. Quinn, S. Mc Allister, C. Walsh, A. Hickman, S. Walsh, E.R. Boylan, M. Sweeney, S. Walsh, L. Linehan, L. Mc Allister, A. Mc Grath, M. Leahy, K. O’Keeffe, M. Moran, M. Culligan, A. Mc Grath, E. Cronin and K. Terry.
