Senior Ladies defeat Fermoy
On Sunday evening last at windswept Paire Na Bríde, a display of pure guts and determination saw our Senior Ladies defeat Fermoy in the Cork County Senior Football Championship on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-11.
This game had all the ingredients of a Championship game, two local rivals, two fully committed teams, a great crowd and a tense and exciting game where the winners were not known til the final few nail-biting minutes.
Bride Rovers played with the wind in the first half but it was Fermoy who were first to score, a Grace Culloty pointed free followed by a point from play had the Rovers in front. A point from Abbie Scannell had the teams level again. Sinead Walsh restored the Rovers lead with a pointed free and minutes later Grace Kearney hammered the ball to the Fermoy net. A brace of points from Aisling Hutchings reduced the deficit before Grace Kearney added another point.
Another point from Sinead Walsh had the Rovers ahead but a goal from Fermoy reduced the deficit to a single point. Rovers opened up a three point lead again but by half time only the minimum was between the sides, Bride Rovers 1-08 Fermoy 1-07.
After playing with a strong wind, a one point lead did not seem to be enough. Fermoy equalised at the start of the second half but Rovers were soon in front again. It was tit-for-tat as both teams swapped points and the lead as well. With the scores level at 1-11 a piece entering the final few minutes.
And in those final minutes, our captain Grace Kearney surged through the Fermoy defence and won a free, up stood 15 year old Katie Quirke, making her debut in senior championship, and cooly slotted the ball over the bar to put the Rovers in front by a point entering time added on. From the resultant Fermoy kickout, the ever impressive Grace Culloty snatched onto the ball and headed straight for the Fermoy goal and with confidence buried the ball to the Fermoy net to complete the scoring and a fine victory for the Rovers girls.
It was real backs to the wall stuff in the second half, our defensive sextet of Evelyn, Arlene, Emma, Michelle, Laura & Niamh were outstanding in the second half, ably assisted by Colette Hogan who was playing as a sweeper. In midfield Jennifer Barry & Eleanor Ahern carried the ball well into attack, Jennifer herself scoring two fine points in the second half. Mary Hazelwood & Grace kearney worked tirelessly in winning ball and feeding the inside forwards. The inside trio of Grace Culloty, Katie Quirke & Sinead Walsh done everything from winning ball, winning frees and scoring those crucial points and goals to help us to a 4 point win.
