Aghada Ladies ‘Football Notes
Aghada U-14 Girls Win East Cork “B” League after Thriller with Youghal
Aghada 5-03 Youghal 2-09
When these two teams met earlier on in the year there was no separating them so the final on Saturday last had the makings of a thriller and it lived up to that expectation. This game was played in splendid sunshine on a marvellously prepared field in Youghal.
Aghada won the toss and opted to play against the small breeze in the first half. Youghal were quick out of the blocks and had the ball in the back of the Aghada net early on. The Aghada girls then settled into the game and hit 1-1 without reply, the goal courtesy of Caitlin Smith. The game swung from end to end with both teams giving there all in the search of glory. Rachel Leahy was controlling midfield and I must say that she put in some hours work at midfield, up and down the field like a race horse. Youghal hit back with a goal of their own and some fine points but just before the break Mary Leahy hit the top corner of the Youghal net from a very tight angle for what was the score of the match to leave the half time score Aghada 2-2 Youghal 2-4. In that first half, the Aghada girls they soaked up a lot of pressure with Ella Lewis, Eimear Cronin and Cecilia McInnes keeping the Youghal forwards at bay.
Aghada were slow to come out of the blocks again in the second half and some fine goalkeeping by Olivia Dzijak kept us in the game when she produced two top class saves to deny Youghal two certain goals. This spurred on the Aghada girls and they hit a purple patch half way through the second half when Mary Leahy hit the Youghal net for the second time and Aoibhin Burke got Aghada’s fourth goal. Youghal weren’t going to lie down and they tacked on a few points of their own to keep the game in the melting pot but the Aghada girls went again and with Sally Mc Allister, Aine Mc Grath and Nicola Bennett controlling things in the half back line and Hazel Walley, Aishling Gilroy and Marie Moran doing the job at the other end we were just keeping ahead of Youghal. Caoimhe O’Carroll and Rhona Sheehan were introduced and they liven up things a bit when they came on.
There was still to be one more twist in this game, with Aghada a point up Youghal were awarded a free on Aghada’s 21 but the resultant effort went wide. The Aghada girls worked the ball up the filed from the kick out and Katie Terry rattled the back of the Youghal net to put us four clear. As time was running out Youghal piled on the pressure looking for a goal but all they produced was a point as there was no way through the Aghada defence and Aghada ran out winners on a score line of Aghada 5-3 Youghal 2-9. To be fair to both teams this was a thrilling game of football with the game moving from end to end, so credit to both teams on producing a thriller.
After the final whistle the cup was presented to Aghada’s captain Aine Mc Grath by Barry Moran PRO of the East Cork Board. He thanked the two teams on a splendid game and wished both teams the very best of luck in the upcoming County Championship. Aine thanked Youghal for a wonderful game and also thanked the management team of Cathal Cronin, Anne Marie Mc Allister, Dave Leahy and John Bennett. When all was said and done it was back to Whitegate for some Ice Cream with the League Cup in tow. Well done to the girls and management and we wish then the best of luck in the upcoming County Championship where they are down to play Mourneabbey in the quarter final which will take place on Monday next June 7th in Mourneabbey @7 pm
