St Colmans Ladies Football

St Colmans 2-2 Fermoy(B) 1-1(U/14 League)
St Colmans U/14 girls got their season under way on the 26 March 2016 against a Fermoy team that were really looking forward to the season. As this was our first game after winning the East Cork last year we were going into the unknown against Fermoy who always have a strong team out. With new players on board coming up from U/12 and Alan Wiggin’s joining Chris on the coaching team this was to be a good test to see where we were at.The girls started off very well with a lot of possession enabling them to settle into the game better than Fermoy and it was’nt long before a beautiful point from play from the boot Anita Hurley sailed over the bar.Anita was to follow that with a well taken goal after 15 mins after receving a brilliant pass from Ava o Mahony, before Fermoy responded with a goal of their own.Going in at half-time a point to the good we were a bit worried that we were’nt taking our scores when they came. The second half started with Fermoy on top but great defending by the backline of Abigail Cody,Sarah Dorgan and Niamh Devaney kept them at bay and any shot that did get thru’ was taken care of by Tara Roche in goals. After 10 mins Colmans got back on top with some great ball retention by the midfield pairing of Ashling Fuchs and Ava Mannion who was to go on and score a cracker of a goal after receiving a defence splitting pass from Molly Mannion.Fermoy did respond with a point of their own to leave only a score in it.Grainne Ryan started a move at centre back that was taken on by Nicole Cott and without wasting any time she delivered a good ball to Katie Montgomery whose shot was blocked down, but first to react was Anna Gilsenan who laid off the ball to Alison hurley to fire over the bar to leave us 4 points to the good.Ali Wiggins at centre forward was her usual self, turning over ball after ball and is putting in some mighty performances. Team:TaraRoche,Abigail Cody,Sarah Kate Dorgan,Niamh Devaney,Grianne Ryan,Anita Hurley(1-1),Nicole Cott,Aishling Fuchs,Ava Mannion(1-0),Ali Wiggins,Alison Hurley(0-1),Katie Montgomery,Rachel Scannell,Anna Gilsenan,Molly Mannion,Ava o Mahony.

St Colmans 2-3 Carrigtwohill 0-5(U/14 League)
Next Game up for the girls was against Carrigtwohill on Saturday 16th April in Carrigtwohill. This would turn out to be a bigger test for the girls and from the start Carrig put it up to them scoring 2 points with out reply. This would have been more were it not for Tara Roche who was outstanding in goals pulling off some great saves. The girls settled after 10 minutes and scored a lovely point from play from the boot of Mary Cowhig after great inter passing play between Ava Mannion,Niamh Devaney and Nicole Cott. This was answered with another Carrig point before Alison Hurley after receiving a fabulous ball from Sinead o Donovan buried the ball to the back of the net. This was to leave us up 1 point at half time and starting to play with that bit more confidence. With the second half under way Carrig did threaten for a while and this is where we saw some excellent defending by Sarah Kate Dorgan,Abigail Cody and Grainne Ryan.Katie Montgomery playing at midfield was instrumental in setting up a brillant move with 10 minutes remaing, after winning the ball in the middle she pulled off a fabulous one two with Ali Wiggins before sending in an inch perfect pass to Rachel Scannell to score a wonderful goal and keep us 5 points ahead.Carrigtwohill answered with 2 more points to keep the match alive before Anita Hurley knocked over a point to leave us 4 ahead on the final whistle. This was a brilliant performance from the girls because at times it looked like we would get overrun by Carrig but in fairness to all playing they stuck to the task and came away deserving winners.Team:Tara Roche,Ava Mannion(0-1),Anna Gilsenan,Grainne Ryan,Rachel Scannell(1-0),Alision Hurley(1-0),Anita Hurley(0-1),Sarah Kate Dorgan,Katie Montgomery,Abigail Cody,Ali Wiggins,Mary Cowhig(0-1),Nicole Cott,Sinead o Donovan,Niamh Devaney.

St Colmans 9-4 Glamire 3-5(B)(U/14 League)

On Saturday The 23 April St Colmans hoped to continue their winning start to the season as they took on Glanmire in Shanagarry.Playing against Glanmire you never know what kind of a side they are going to field as they have a lot of numbers in their under age structure. These girls would have been on the receiving end of some heavy scorelines against these girls @ U/12.St Colmans growing in confidence from their previous wins were not going to be out played by any one and right from the start laid down a marker scoring 2 goals within a matter of minutes both of these coming from the boot of Rachel Scannell and Amy Doyle.2 lovely points from out the field by Aishling Fuchs were quickly followed by 3 goals in as many minutes from the boot of Alision Hurley. With the girls well in control and playing some lovely football half time arrived with us well up on the score board. With the second half under way we were put to the task by Glanmire who never gave up and before we knew it they were after scoring 2-2 without reply. This gave the girls the wake up call that was needed and further points from Keeley Fitzgerald and Ava o Mahony were followed by 2 more goals from Rachel Scannell who has got into the right frame of mind in front of goals scoring in all our games so far. Team:Tara Roche,Niamh Devaney,Sarah Kate Dorgan,Abigail Cody,Grainne Ryan,Katie Montgomery,Molly Mannion,Ava Mannion,Aishling Fuchs(0-2),Mary Cowhig,Lucy Smiddy,Ali Wiggins,Rachel Scannell(3-0),Nicole Cott(1-0),Amy Doyle(1-0),Sinead o Donovan,Alision Hurley(4-0),Keeley Fitzgearld(0-1),Ava o Mahony(0-1),Emily Walsh,Anna Gilsenan.

St Colmans 1-6 Lisgoold 0-8(U/14 League)

Last Monday April 25th the girls welcomed Lisgoold to Shanagarry to play their 4th game of the league and wanted to keep their 100% record intact.Lisgoold started the better and were putting us under fierce pressure all over the field with some excellent football. The speed at which they were playing at caught us off guard and despite great effort from all we went in 4 points adrift at half time and looking for some inspiration from our coaches Alan Wiggins and Chris Scanlon. With the second half under way St Colmans lifted their game with Aishling fuchs and Katie Montgomery taking over in midfield the ball became more plentiful and here we saw Ali Wiggins and Lucy Smiddy starting to bring the ball forward for the forwards. It was going to be a case of when you a chance take it and Mary Cowhig and Amy Doyle obliged with with a point a piece.Another point from Alison Hurley gave us hope and everyone responded by upping their game.Sarah Kate Dorgan has to come in for special mention as the amount on interceptions she won was crazy and not alone that the ball she delivered down the field was of exceptional quality.Lisgoold however kept the attacks coming and some brilliant defending by the back 6 kept them from breaking thru’.Tara Roche in goals was here usual brilliant best and her long kick outs were helping us to start our own attacks out the field. With excitement growing on the sideline we were to bring the game back to a one point game with 2 excellent points from Alison after great work from the half forward line of Keeley,Emma and Emily. Then with 4 minutes remaining Ashling Fuchs won a great ball in the middle of the field and soloed her way thru’ many tackles before releasing Alison who certainly knows her way to the back of the net.Two points up and game on Lisgoold responded straight away with a point of their own to leave it a one point game again but try as they might they could not break down the Colmans rear guard.Final whistle sounded to sheer delight for the St Colmans following and disappointment for Lisgoold who must have thought that they were robbed. While I can sympathize with them we all know that goals win matches in these tight affairs.Lisgoold will come back stronger.
