Kerry Ladies Make Strong Start to Munster U 16 “A” Football Championship

The Kerry U-16 Ladies showed they are a force to be reckoned with as they started out the defence of their Munster U 16 crown defeating Cork by 3-10 to 0-07 in the opening round of this year’s championship on Saturday last.
Cork had the better of the opening exchanges and put the Kerry backs under pressure but failed to convert this into scores. Kerry took a few minutes to get going but points in the fourth and fifth minute settled them before they hit their first goal in the eight minute to put them firmly in the driving seat. Cork were another goal down before they got their opening points mid way through the half.
Kerry were now dominant nearly in all quarters with the very talented Fiadhna Tagney scoring some splendid long range points for the Kingdom and the inside forward line of Aoife O Callaghan, Hannah O’ Donoghue and Labhoise Walmsley were in devastating form. Cork however missed a penalty and a number of scoreable chances and should have been a lot closer at the half time break but as it was the kingdom led by 2-06 to 0-02 at the end of the first period.
The Cork management made a number of switches just before and at half time and these worked well as Cork attacked and scored some nice points at the start of the second period but try as they might just could not get through a very tight well practiced Kerry back line for a much needed goal
Kerry mid field were on top of their game distributing the ball well to the forwards who scored some fine points and had a third goal in the final minute to leave them convincing winners on a score line 3-10 to 0-07.
While Kerry were super on the day, Cork had some good individual performances and need to gel better as a team and be more cohesive in their play. They were not at their best on this occasion and have a lot of work to do on the training ground but I have no doubt no stone will be left unturned and hopefully there will have another game with the Kerry Ladies later in the season. Well done to all the East Cork girls on this team especially those making their first appearance in the Cork Jersey

The Cork Senior Ladies got their Lidl National Football League campaign back on track with a comprehensive win over Galway in Tuam on Sunday. Goals were the order of the day and three goals in just over three minutes mid way through the first half (Two from Aine O’Sullivan Terry) and one from Ciara O’ Sullivan saw the Lee side Ladies well on their way as they led by 4-09 to 0-08 at the interval. The second half was more of the same as Cork worked the ball well up the field time scoring a further 2-06 in the second period. Top scorer was Orla Finn who notched up 1-07 for the day. East Cork were well represented in this game also, with Aghada’s Hannah Looney making her debut at this grade to join her club mates Roisín Phelan and Emma Farmer Well done to all concerned
