Starting on the 20th of April for the first time in the clubs history we are having a Mixed Street Leagues which will consist of 8 teams for two age categories U10 & U12 and will run for 4 week period with two 20 minute every Wednesday the finals planned for the 11th of May. Our clubs feels that this is a huge step forward and further strengthens the link between the GAA club and the LGFA club while promoting the sport in the schools and community.
On the final night of the street leagues we plan to run a Family Bingo night as a fundraiser for both clubs.
Great start for Cobh.
U14 League game at home to Bride Rovers we started with 4 new girls to the sport and 4 u12’s so it was an inexperienced team as such but this was spectacular game of football to watch as both sides exchanged scores right though the first half and Bride Rovers led by 2 points at half time. This continued right through the second half with teams exchanging the lead up till the last 7 or 8 minutes when Cobh began to pull away a little. There is great credit due to both sets of girls putting on such a display.
U16 Started their first league campaign match away to Carrigtwohill we were short quite a few influential girls on the night with both teams only able to muster up 12 players. The first half of this game Carrigtwohill were far the stronger team with Cobh being hemmed back inside their own half we also had two injuries in the first half. The girls showed real spirit and looked more determined in the second half and came out with some great defending and passages of play which led to a few scores but unfortunately Carrigtwohill were too strong on the night.
The next evening our U16’s took to the field again at home against St Colman’s this match proved to be a different specimen entirely it was 15 v 15 and had subs to spare. The girls had learned a lot from the match the previous night and you could see this, it was a brilliant game of football to watch with Cobh taking the lead early on and maintaining the lead for the rest of the game to win their first well deserved victory of the season. It was great to see so many supporters out in force and to clap and cheer their team off at the end of the game.
U12’s had their very first match at home to Erin’s Own the skill and ability that was displayed on the pitch was an absolute pleasure to watch the majority of this team was new to the sport and this was their first game. Erin’s Own Started off fast and took the first two scores but once Cobh settled into the game they clawed back the lead and put Erin’s Own on the back foot. The game was very free flowing with no need for the referee’s intervention right throughout the game, with some fantastic passages of play from both sides. The girls came off victorious in the end and it was fantastic to see so many family members of the girls involved there to support and praise them.
Upcoming fixtures: U16 away to Delaney’s this Thursday 24TH / U14 away to Midleton Saturday 26th
