St Colmans Ladies Football
Mullane Stars as Colmans take 2nd East Cork Title
St Colmans 4-16 Fermoy(B) 1-0 U/14 East Cork
St Colmans ladies U/14 pulled off a very convincing win against Fermoy in the final of the (D) grade championship in Shanagarry on Saturday last and thus sparked off huge celebrations in the village of Shanagarry,Ladysbridge and Ballymacoda. This was a day when all the hard work at training under the watchful eye of coach Chris Scanlon came together and a lot of the football was a delight to see.St Colmans took control right from the start and started to play the game at a very high tempo but one aspect of this that stood out was our inability not to score and it was 10 minutes before we finally settled our nerves with a marvellous point from the boot of Mary Cowhig after some great work out the field by Daisy Bryne who is turning out to be a very good midfielder with a huge engine.Further points were to follow from Aishling Fuchs and Alison Hurley. From here until halftime we were to witness some great interpassing play between the front eight with a lot of the moves starting from Andre Mullane at centre back who won nearly all the breaking ball around the middle of the field. This in turn led to a good supply of ball into the forwards who were very accurate with their shooting picking out point after point. When Fermoy did get down the field Jenny o Sullivan(Captain),Katie Montgomery,Emily Abernethy and Sile Ryan were well up with the pace of the game and only leaked 1 goal in that first half.Tara Roche was her usual self assured in goals. At halftime Colmans were in a strong position leading by 1-12 to 1-0.The second half started with the same intensity as the first and this was needed at this stage as Fermoy came out looking to save this game. For 10 minutes good competitive were battles were taking place for possession of ball around the middle with Aishlin,Jenny,Ava Mannion and Sophie Smiddy working brilliantly together and winning these .This in turn led to the right ball being delivered to Anita Hurley who certainly knows her way to goal and coming away with 2-1 after some great battles with the corner back. The one thing that stood out for me was the way the colmans players all took up a marker on the Fermoy kick out and this put fierce pressure on the goalkeeper when she was kicking outfield.A lot of these balls were brilliantly read by Captain Jenny o Sullivan and from one of these Aoife Bernard scored a superb goal. With the game over as a challenge Colmans were to add another couple of points before the referee blew for full time and sent the girls into great celebrations. The cup was presented to Captain Jenny o Sullivan who thanked all involved in making this happen. She gave special praise to all the parents for the effort put in by them in driving to matches and training. She also thanked Russell Rovers GAA for the use of their facilities all year thru’ and thus ensuring a place to play and develop their skills.Special thanks to Celine Roche who is with the girls all the time taking care of all their bumps and bruises and keeping the jerseys clean all year,John Ryan who is always there to put up the goals and flags and give great encouragement on the line,Fiona Fuchs and Caroline o Neill who help out at training and organize matches. All these efforts put in by different people is what make a club prosper for the development of our children thru’ sport.Last but not least a big Thank You to Chris Scanlon for the huge effort he put in in organizing training and turning this bunch of players into a very good footballing outfit
