St Colman’s Ladies Football Club

St Colman’s 6-9 Delaney’s 2-1 ( U/16 “D” Championship Final)
Last Saturday October 17th St Colmans U/16 Ladies brought off a resounding win against Delaneys in the final of the U/16 “D” Championship and thus sparked off celebrations in the villages of Shanagarry,Ladysbridge and Ballymacoda. This team were captained by Maeve Steele and it was the first time in over 4 years that silver has been raised in the club. The game started very positively for Colmans when after 2 minutes Anita Hurley received the perfect pass from Daisy Byrne and with nothing else on her mind she goaled to settle any nerves that were there .After the resulting kick out the ball was won by Maeve Steele at midfield who found Sinead Roche running out on the right and when Sinead delivered the ball into the forwards there was Anita again to strike the ball to the back of the net.St Colmans in the next 10 minutes were guilty of trying to score goals when points were the better option but thats very easily said from the hurlers on the ditch and when Katie Scannell gets the right type of ball it is very hard to stop her scoring goals.Katie scored one of these after getting a defence splitting pass from midfielder Aisling Fuchs who was having some battle with the Delaney’s #14, Delaney’s scored a goal of their own and leaving us know that they were playing too.The next Delaney’s attack saw the ball brilliantly won by Aoife Bernard at cenre back and after great inter passing between Tara Daly and Catriona Fuchs the ball was won by Katie who rounded her marker to slip the ball pass the keeper to extend the Colmans lead.A couple of points by Tara Daly and Daisy Byrne were to give Colmans a nice lead heading into half-time.Colmans were winning 4-4 to 1-0 at half time and well in control as the second half started. The girls were not going to let this game slip and attacked from the whistle with Andre Mullane,Jenny o Sullivan and Ava Mannion moving up towards midfield and thus ensuring that a constant supply of ball was being directed into the forward line who duly obliged by racking up a big score. At times during this second half when Delaneys did threaten Emily Abernethy,Sile Ryan and Ciara Mellerick who suffered two heavy blows on her shoulder were well up to the task.A lot of the time when a team scores a big win we tend to forget the girls at the back but I can tell you one thing, these girls have been brilliant all year thru’ and when some-one does go in behind them Tara Roche is always there pulling off great saves.A lot of hard work was put in this year By Chris Scanlon,Celine Roche,Caroline o Neill and Fiona Fuchs and to them we say a big Thank You.To all the parents for supporting your kids all year and the support at all the games Thank You.A lot of these girls have the U/14 final to look foward and we wish them well in their quest for more silverware.
