St Colmans 2-10 Lisgoold 3-5 (U/14 “D” Championship)

St Colmans U/14 ladies qualified for the final of the U/14 “D” championship after a deserved win against Lisgoold last Sunday at Russell Rovers GAA grounds in Shanagarry. Right from the throw in Colmans got stuck in with Aishling Fuchs winning the ball and delivering an excellent pass to Alice Irwin who worked the ball quickly up to Mary Cowhig at corner forward who rounded 2 markers to score an excellent goal and settle St Colmans nerves. Two minutes later after great work from Daisy Byrne at midfield Mary kicked over another point and this saw Lisgoold marking this lively player more closely. With the half forward line of Sophie Smiddy Alice Irwin and Alison Hurley in control for the next ten minutes, Colmans extended their lead further with points from Alison and her sister Anita. When Lisgoold did launch attacks they were well broken up by the ever reliable half back line of Andre Mullane, Jenny o Sullivan and Aoife Bernard After 16 minutes Alice Irwin(injured) was replaced by Shauna o Connell and with her first ball she split the goal post for a wonderful point. However Lisgoold did fight back and took the game to Colmans for the remaining 10 minutes of the first half and put the backs under fierce pressure with attack after attack. A lot of these were well defended by Emily Abernethy,Sile Ryan, Sarah Kate Dorgan and Tara Roche in goals. Lisgoold did however break thru to score an excellent goal with 5 minutes remaining and quickly followed this with a brace of points to leave only 2 points between the sides. With Colmans a small bit nervous Daisy finished the half with a well taken point from play after great work from her midfield partner Aishling to leave the score St Colmans 1-6 Lisgoold 1-2.The second half started like the first with a goal for Colmans being scored almost right away by Anita Hurley who received a defence splitting pass from corner forward Ava Mannion and leave us 7 points to the good. The last 15 mins were to be played out in dramatic fashion after Lisgoold scored 1-2 without reply and this is where the Colmans team work came into play. With Tara Roche pulling off some fantastic saves in goal as Lisgoold launched attack after attack and these were answered by Colmans own attacks which saw us yield another couple of points thru’ the boot of the hurley sister’s. Anna Mellerick came for Daisy Byrne and Katie Montgomery came for Anita Hurley and from here on it was tit-for-tat. While I would like to pick out one or two players for special mention it would be impossible as the last couple of minutes showed the fighting spirit of the girls when Lisgoold scored another goal to leave only a kick of the ball between them (2pts).Lisgoold had another attack to come but great defending by Colmans saw us qualify for the final and 60 minutes away from silverware. Well done to coach Chris Scanlon and all involved in this team. Bring on the Final.

St Colmans 5-14 Cobh 1-0 (U/16 D Championship)

St Colmans U/16 ladies qualified for the final of the U/16 D championship against Cobh last Wednesday evening in Cobh scoring an emphatic win against what was probably a stronger looking Cobh outfit when they took to the pitch but our girls had way too much skill for them. The first half saw the girls play with great determination and team work and this was reflected in the way the scoring went with all 6 forwards scoring points from play. The only goal scored in this half for Colmans was in response to a goal by Cobh and what a goal it was with Maeve Steele who dominated midfield setting off centre forward Cathriona Fuchs on a solo run that took her around two players, playing a perfect 1-2 with Tara Daly before sending the ball crashing to the back of the net. Halftime score left Colmans in front 1-10 to 1-0.The second half brought the same drive that the girls showed in the first half and while sometimes its easier to stop playing thru’ lack of concentration the girls kept their game plan going with some lovely passing and support play. The backs were doing what was required of them and the forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over. It was great to see Katie Scannell back after a long lay off thru’ injury and Katie did’nt leave us down either scoring 2-5 in total. Sile Ryan was moved to full forward for the second half and scored 2 goals .It is unusual to see Sile’s name on the score sheet as she is always preventing goals going in at the other end from full back. Well done to Chris Scannell and mentors on reaching another final and we wish you all well when the time comes.
