Busy week for Glanmire ladies’ Football Club
An unbelievably busy week for Glanmire ladies last week as we endeavoured to capture two County ‘A’ titles and also prepared to welcome the Cork Senior Ladies to Glanmire for their annual Open Training/Media night. Eamonn O Connor took on the responsibility of leading the organisation of the Open Night on the Friday night. With great cooperation from Sars Hurling club, sponsors and a whole host of volunteers, the night proved a great success for the very large crowd present. A big thank you to Neilus Carroll, Kieran Keane, Jerome Casey and Pat Culloty, all officers of the Cork ladies football board, for attending. A massive well done also to the Cork senior ladies who stayed on after training to sign autographs and chat with the many supporters.
U 12 A County Final
On Saturday, we concentrated on football and our U-12s were first up V Nemo in Passage at 4:15. This was an extremely tough task as the camogie board insisted that the U12 camogie final would go ahead at 12:45. The girls lined out however at a very well prepared Passage West venue and despite Nemo starting brightly with a very good first ten minutes, Glanmire got more into the game and went into the break with a 1-5 to 0-0 lead after a very well taken Emma Mulcahy goal. Nemo had a strong breeze to their backs for the second half but this did not deter the Glanmire girls who again dominated the second half, and when Evie Twomey scored a great goal with ten minutes to go to make the score 2-8 to 0-0 the result was never in doubt. The game ended 3-9 to 1-1. It must be said that this team have a brilliant defensive unit which most teams find impossible to break down. Well done to Alan, Conor, Mark, Damien, John and the girls on a brilliant performance.
U 16 A County final
We then turned our attention to Carrigaline where our U16s faced St Vals in the U16 ‘A’ County final. Heartbreak awaited us here however, falling short by two points. Glanmire had three wides before they had their first score on the board, a goal by Ellen Twomey, which had them one point up. Glanmire dominated the rest of the half but still only managed to be ahead by 1 point at half time. St Vals upped their game in the second half and were three points up with ten minutes to go, Glanmire didn’t wilt however and brought it back to one before Vals got the insurance point in the last minute. Thanks to Robbie Smyde for the well prepared pitch and to Peter O Leary for reffing. All our teams are still involved in East Cork championships and we wish them the best of luck over the next few weeks. Best of Luck to the Cork Senior ladies tomorrow as they go for five in a row, their tenth in eleven years.
