Rockbán Ladies crowned Junior “A” East Cork Champions 2015

Monday night saw the conclusion of the East Cork Junior Ladies’ Championship for 2015 with the “A” final being contested by two clubs from both ends of the division, Rockbán and Aghada. One could be forgiven for thinking it was a night at the end of the October rather than July as it was cold and windy, however, the football was top drawer with both sides giving their all and the very large crowd were treated to a game of junior ladies’ football at it’s best.
Cork ace Valerie Mulcahy opened the scoring for Rockbán in the first few minutes when she scored from the penalty spot and despite playing against a very strong wind scored a second goal a few minutes later. Aghada re-grouped and picked off their points and Amanda Bennett and Sarah Leahy pulled them right back into it with two well taken goals. In fact Aghada were unlucky as they had a number of shots come back off the wood work in the first period. The game was delayed just before half time as there was an injury to one of the Aghada players but they led at the break by 2-04 to 2-02. Rockbán playing with the aid of the wind in the second period played some lovely free flowing cohesive football and opened up a two point gap mid way through the half. The game was all but decided when Lorna Coffey scored a third goal for Rockbán, leaving them ahead by 5 points with a few minutes to go. To their credit the Aghada Ladies never stopped trying but having to play three matches in the last seven days proved a bridge too far and Rockbán battened down the hatches and held the sea siders just to two points in the last few minutes winning on a score line 3-07 to 2-07. Congratulations to Rockbán and well done to both teams for a superb game of football. Best wishes to both clubs in the knockout stages in the county championships which are also well under way.
Tom Goggin chairman of the East Cork Ladies’ Football Board was on hand to present the trophy and thanked the two teams for an outstanding game of football.
Well done and thanks also to the Rockbán club for hosting the tie and having the pitch in tremendous condition for the game.
