Aghada Narrowly Defeat Glanmire in Thrilling U-14 “A” Ladies’ Final
Aghada 4 -10 Glanmire 4-08
In what was undoubtedly one of the best games of Ladies’ Football seen in East Cork this year Aghada U-14 girls were victorious over Glanmire in the final of the East Cork U-14 League played in Sallybrook, Glanmire on Sunday evening. End to end stuff just does not describe this thrilling encounter. Lauren Linehan scored three points in the first three minutes to set Aghada on the road. Glanmire wiped this out with a goal in the fifth minute. Both sides were nip and tuck until Mary Leahy lobbed the keeper to give Aghada a three point lead which they maintained until the break.1-06 to1-03.
The second period got better and better with Aghada stretching their lead with goals from Leahy and Linehan with the score 3-10 to 1-06 after forty four minutes. Leading by ten points everyone thought it was all over but the Glanmire girls rallied and two goals from Ellen Baker put a different complexion on it. Aghada backs were under severe pressure and but for some outstanding goalkeeping by player of the match Olivia Dijak, who made at least five superb saves, the result might have been much different. As it was Aghada weathered the storm and despite conceding a goal late on, Aghada came again with Lauren McAllister sealing the victory for the sea side girls with another goal and emerged victorious on a score line 4 10 to 4-08.
Aghada were slightly better on this occasion but Glanmire had defeated them a few weeks ago when they won the County Féile title so there is never too much between these two great sides. Well done to both teams and congratulations to every member of the Aghada panel who showed exactly what team work and determination can do.
Aghada have drawn Mourneabbey in the quarter final of the County championship this game will take place in Rostellan on Monday night next throw in 745 pm
