Cork Retain All Ireland U-14 Blitz Title and Cork Seniors are Crowned National League Division 1 Champions For 2015
The Annual U-14 All Ireland Blitz took place on Saturday last May 16th .This year the blitz was held at a wonderful Rathleague venue in Portlaoise. Cork has a tremendous record in this event and once again fielded two teams which enabled all girls to get game time and give the selectors a chance to see everybody and in true Cork fashion the players did not disappoint.
Both teams’s competed very well in two difficult groups made up of the following team’s
Division 1A
• Cavan, Dublin “A”, Mayo, Roscommon, Tipperary, Cork (Red)
Division 1 B
Monaghan, Dublin “B”, Waterford, Kerry, Meath, Cork (White)
The girls had great support from a large group of parents and board members who travelled for this National U 14 competition. The players were rotated throughout the day experiencing a lot of game time and got better and better as the competition progressed. In division 1B Cork won two games Vs Waterford and Monaghan, and were narrowly defeated by Kerry. In the final games v. Dublin “B” and Meath the Cork team competed very well and if a few unlucky scoring opportunities had gone our way it could have been a lot closer. Meath eventually topped the group and advanced to play Cork Red in the Division 1 final.
In Division 1 Cork Red struggled to get a draw in their first game v Cavan and were it not for two late late goals would not have ultimately qualified for the final. However as with the Cork White team the girls grew in confidence as the competition progressed. Cork Red defeated Mayo, Dublin “A”, Tipperary and made it through to the final where they were up against Meath who advanced from Division 1B.
The final was a pulsating advertisement for ladies football with Cork finally crossing the finishing line to win on a score line of Cork 4.06 Meath 2.03. Congratulations girls and the very best of luck in the All Ireland semi final in a few weeks time.
The Cork U-14 players and management would especially like to thank Portlaoise GAA for hosting this wonderful event at their fantastic Rathleague venue, the great organising committee who kept the show on the road all day long and were most helpful and courteous to us, and all the referees without whom we would not be able to play any games. Well done and thanks to the LGFA for overseeing the event which showcases all that is wonderful about this special game and the girls who provide us with such great entertainment. Well done and many thanks to all involved.
Cork Senior Ladies take another National League Title
The victorious Cork U-14 Team went on to watch their heroes in the replay of the Tesco National League Div 1 final in O’Moore Park between Cork and Galway senior Ladies. Congratulations and very well done to the Cork panel and management team who put in a superb effort to eventually take the title on a score line Cork 14 points Galway 1-10. Well done and thanks to all the girls / Ladies who did Cork Ladies’ Football proud in Portlaoise on Super Saturday.
