Mixed Fortunes for Aghada Ladies’ Football Teams

Last weekend saw Aghada Ladies’ Football Club play their first games in 2015 as they had two teams in action with the U 14 playing Inch Rovers on Saturday and the U 16 girls playing Fermoy the following day

East Cork U-14 League Aghada 4-7 Inch 3-7

Both Aghada and Inch played out a thrilling game in Killeagh last Saturday in very testing conditions in the first round of the U-14 League. Aghada drew first blood in this ding dong affair courtesy of Mary Leahy; this was quickly followed by another from the boot of Katie Terry. Inch were to get the next three scores to lead 0-3 to 0-2 after the first quarter before Lauren Linehan got the seaside girls back on level terms. Lauren was to get the next score before Inch struck for there their first goal. Katie Terry had the last say before the break with a well taken goal after a good assist from Ally Rose and Bridget Wall to leave the half time score Aghada 1-5 Inch 1-4. The Aghada girls were quick out of the blocks on the resumption with a goal from Mary Leahy. After this score Inch came thundering into the game and hit Aghada for 2-3 without reply. This did not deter the seaside girls and they dug deep with two goals in the space of two minutes from Lauren Mc Allister after great work out the field from Eva Rose Boylan, Maeve Ryan, Maeve Culligan and Marie Moran and a well taken point from Aine Mc Grath to put us two points clear. Inch came again but some tremendous defending from Elmer Cronin, Clare Walsh, Nicola Bennett, Katie O’Farrell, Sally Mc Allister and Olivia Dijak in goals kept the Inch forwards at bay. The last score of the game came from the boot of Lauren Linehan to leave the final score Aghada 4-7 Inch 3-7. Credit to both teams on a tremendous game in testing conditions. O. Dijak, N. Bennett, C. East Cork U 16 League Aghada 2-07 Fermoy 3-10

Fermoy was the venue for our U 16 girls first outing this year on Sunday last and after a very exciting game it was the home side that emerged victorious.
Aghada started well and raced into an early lead but the Fermoy girls slowly pegged them back only to see Aghada pull away again with two well taken goals to lead at the break by five points.
Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the sea siders as the Fermoy girls started to play some lovely football scoring from long range. The sides were level with ten minutes to go and try as the might Aghada just could not penetrate the opposition backs. Fermoy scored two goals in that period to seal a hard fought victory on a score line 2-07 to 3-10.Well done to our girls who never stopped trying and will improve as the season progresses. Next weekend we face stiff opposition again as we play Glanmire in Rostellan at 1 O Clock on Sunday
