East Cork U 16 “A” Championship Title For Aghada Ladies

Aghada 3-09 Fermoy 2-08

Sunday morning saw the last game of the year in the East Cork Ladies Football Board calendar for 2014 with the meeting of Aghada and Fermoy in the U 16 “A” Championship final. Kilworth was the venue for this game played in sunny but extremely cold conditions. The Aghada girls who only a week earlier had been defeated in the league final were keen to make amends and finish the year in a flourish. This they did in fine style with a good well balanced team performance.
It could be well described as a game of two halves. Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze the Aghada ladies got off to a flying start scoring 2-02 in the opening eight minutes. Both sides played some lovely football but the sea side girls were well on top in the first half and led 3-06 to 0-03 at the break.
The second period saw the Fermoy Ladies charge back with two very well taken goals and some nice points. The Aghada backs came under some severe pressure as Fermoy closed the gap to four but the girls in green stood firm and were not going to be beaten for a second week in a row. Aghada forwards scored three further points and hit the wood work on a number of occasions and try as they might the Fermoy ladies just could not get any closer than four points. This was a very exciting and tense game right to the end with the Aghada Girls victorious for a second year in a row in this competition winning on a score line 3-09 to 2-08. Congratulation to Aghada and very well done to both teams for a superb game of fast open football played in a wonderful spirit.

There is one remaining competition to be completed in this years fixtures list with Fermoy facing Glanmire in the U 16 “A” League final and this game will be played very early in the new year.
