Aghada Ladies’ Football Notes

Congratulations to the U 12 Aghada girl’s team who won the U 12 County title a few weeks ago, they followed this up with a great win in the E Cork league and are also in the East Cork championship final hopefully this will be played shortly.

U 10 Girls

On Saturday last it was the turn of the U 10 girls and after a great victory over Fermoy in the semi that qualified them for the “A” East Cork final and hopes were high that they could give one more big performance.
In 2013 Youghal defeated Aghada at semi final stage of the U 10 competition and this year both sides made it to the final. Rostellan was the venue and the game was watched by a very large crowd which made it all the more special for the girls.
It was a pity that it was very windy as both teams struggled and after a great first half the sides were level. Aghada had the wind at their backs in the second period and this was the difference and they managed to put over some lovely scores to just edge out the Youghal girls. Gordon Kinsley vice Chairman of the East Cork Ladies Football board made the presentation to the Aghada captain Ciara Ryan

U16 & Minors

The U-16 and Minors teams made there exit from the County championships at the hands of Eire Óg .Both sides put up a spirited performance but the fire power of The Eire Óg girls was a little too much. The U 16 girls have still to play Bride Rovers in the “B” League final and Fermoy in the “A” East Cork championship Final while our minors will also play Fermoy in the final of the East Cork “A” championship. Hopefully these will be played in the next few weeks as it has been a long year for these girls

East Cork U 14 “A” Title for Aghada Ladies Football
Aghada 4-08 Glanmire 1-07

Aghada U 14 Girls won the East Cork “A” U 14 Championship for 2014 when they defeated Glanmire in Rostellan on Tuesday evening. This was a great result for the girls who were defeated by the same opposition in the League final last month. Only last week the Aghada girls defeated a very good Inch Rovers side in the semi final and they continued to play some lovely football on Tuesday evening. Eva Rose Boylan’s goal in the second minute steadied the team and this was followed by a Lauren McAllister point before the Glanmire girls levelled with a point and a goal in the thirteenth minute. Glanmire should have pushed on and should have added several scores but were guilty of some very poor shooting as it was they only managed a slender lead for a short period before a goal from Sarah Leahy just before the half time whistle gave the sea siders a two point lead at the break.
Aghada started much better in the second period with points from Amy Hickman and Sarah Walsh before Sarah Leahy hit her second goal just six minutes into the half. Aghada now began to play some beautiful team football and passed the ball with some ease; try as they might the Glanmire ladies just could not make any inroads into a very slick well drilled outfit who just knew it was there night. Sharp shooter Lauren Linehan added another goal and both sides exchanged a number of points before referee Maurice Mulcahy blew the final whistle to give Aghada a well deserved victory on a score line 4-08 to 1-07.
Barry Moran PRO of the East Cork Ladies’ Football board congratulated both teams on a great sporting game of skilful football and made to presentation to a proud Aghada captain Megan Sweeney.

Brendan Martin Cup
Earlier in the day in the day Roisín Phelan and Emma Farmer brought the All Ireland Ladies Football trophy The Brendan Martin cup to the local National schools. These two young women have been tremendous ambassadors for our club on the national stage. They were joined by other members of the Aghada ladies football club with the three county cups won this year. The Aghada Camogie Club were also well represented and they brought their U 14 and 16 County cups won this year. The boys from the juvenile section of Aghada GAA club also brought the U 16 and minor county cups which they won in the last few weeks. The also had the cup for the Rebel Óg club of the month which they only collected the day before (so a big congratulations to the lads).
