U 16 “D” East Cork Ladies’ Football League Final
Fermoy “B” 2-11 Youghal 2-08

Fermoy “B” overcame Youghal in the final of the East Cork under 16 “D” league played at a lovely Youghal venue on Friday 29th August. This was a great game of Ladies Football played by two well drilled and very enthusiastic teams who both wanted to take the title. From the outset Youghal took the game to Fermoy but were guilty of some very poor shooting as they had four wides in as many minutes. Fermoy on the other hand must have thought it was not going to be their night as they missed three goal chances in the opening few minutes in fairness two of these chances were brilliantly saved by the Youghal keeper April Arthur who was outstanding ,the third rebounded off the cross bar. Player of the match Lisa Geary finally broke the deadlock when she scored a goal and a point for Fermoy in the seventh minute. Youghal fought back and points from Caitriona O’Keeffe. Ellen O Brien and Hannah O Connell saw them take the lead. This was short lived as Lisa Geary levelled the game with two further points one from a free to leave the score at half time 1-03 to 0-6.

Unfortunately there was a very heavy shower of rain at the break and continued for the opening minutes of the second period, this made it very difficult for both teams. Fermoy seemed to adapt better and scored some lovely points and when Geary scored her second goal for Fermoy in the twelfth minute one felt it was a bridge too far for Youghal who now trailed by 6 points. The Sea side girls did not think that way, led by Chloe Landers who was their best player on view playing from the half back position they fought back to level the tie with two great goals. Both sides exchanged scores but the strength of the Fermoy panel now came into play as they were able to bring on some outstanding girls who with fresh legs put renewed life into their side. They added three further points which was enough to see them over the winning line, Youghal never gave up and were camped in the Fermoy half for the last five minutes but the Fermoy Backs were superb and kept them at bay until the final whistle sounded leaving Fermoy victorious on a score line 2-11 to 2-08.

Congratulations to Fermoy and very well done to Youghal who put in a great performance. This was a very exciting game of Ladies Football played in a great spirit and well done to both teams, mentors and supporters for their exemplary conduct both on and off the field which made James O’Brien’s referee job all the easier. The trophy was presented to the Fermoy captain Niamh Ryan by Gordon Kinsley vice chairman of the East Cork Ladies’ football Board.
