Aghada Ladies’ Football Club Wins
Tesco Homegrown Club of the month for July 2014
Aghada Ladies’ Football have been named Tesco Homegrown Club of the month for July. This is a huge honour for the Aghada Club, who have put in a tremendous amount of work especially at under age over the last few years and are now reaping the rewards.
Aghada Ladies’ Football Club was originally founded in the mid 1970’s and played in an informal East Cork Championship at junior level in the following year. There were only around 20 members and most matches were played in the winter when the GAA pitches were free. Unfortunately the club was only active for 7/8 years.
In 1995 the club was reformed and took an active role at East Cork and county board level as well as competing at junior level. Two years later a juvenile section was set up and has gone from strength to strength and now has a membership of 108. Aghada competes at all levels up to junior.
In 2006 the club won its first East Cork title at Junior “B” and also the first County title at U 12 “D”
Success at county level has been slow since with the club winning only six county trophies in total ; two of which have come last year and one this year 2014.
We are fortunate to have a very strong and active divisional board in East Cork and Aghada have won numerous trophies at all grades, the most recent being the East Cork Junior “B” title this year.
Aghada has proved to be a very valuable spoke in the wheel of Cork inter county teams successes over the years. Emer O Donovan won six All Ireland Championship medals with her county between 2003 and 2008.Emma Farmer and Roisín Phelan have won All Ireland medals with the Cork senior Ladies for the last two years and are now established and valuable team members, Hannah Looney also has a number of All Ireland medals and was part of the Cork Minor team defeated by Galway in the All Ireland final last Saturday. Several others have won All Ireland medals with Cork in the last few years including Cassie Tynan, Christine Moran, Sarah Leahy and Aileen McGrath.
2013 Was undoubtedly the most successful for the club winning the County “B” Under 16 and East Cork “A” Titles and also the U 12 “B” County and East Cork “A” Competitions The minors also won the East Cork “B” Title. Couple this with 6 girls winning All Ireland medals for Cork it was truly a magnificent year.
2014 has also been a super year so far with the juniors winning the county “C” League and the East Cork “B” Championship and they have also reached the quarter final of the county championship defeating Carrigaline on Monday night last and to win the club of the month award has put the icing on the cake.
The U 14 team won the East Cork section of the Féile and are in the league final. All other grades have reached the knockout stages of their respective competitions which will be finished in the next few weeks.
Aghada train and play in Rostellan and are indebted to Aghada GAA Club for their continued support and use of the wonderful facilities. They have a very good relationship also with the Aghada Camogie club with both clubs working together for the betterment of the girls.
Main sponsors for 2014 are Robinson Tyres and McCarthy Commercials but the Ladies Club have many other great sponsors who help out all the time so a big thank you to all as we could not continue without your support.
Aghada Ladies’ Football Club is lucky to have a small but dedicated team looking after the needs of the girls. There is also a great team of unsung volunteers too many to mention who organise training and matches and look after the well being of the girls. We thank all involved (again too many to mention) in the 1970’s and 1990’s for their fore sight and work in establishing the club and also all the officers, mentors and trainers over the years who have done an outstanding job.
Aghada Ladies Football Club would like to thank Cork Ladies Football Board for awarding them the Tesco home grown Club of the month for July it is a great honour and also Tesco for their continued support and sponsorship of Ladies Football events at grass roots level in Cork County.
Success is wonderful when it comes but there is more to Ladies football. Training and playing with other girls of your own age group and being part of a team is a vital part of the development of all youngsters and Aghada Ladies Football Club tries to foster this.
Training is on every Monday night in Rostellan at 6 30pm and everyone is welcome So if you have never tried Ladies Football NOW IS YOUR TIME and come and give it a go with one of the hardest working clubs in Cork.
Congratulations and well done to everyone in the club on winning the TESCO HOMEGROWN Cork County Club of the month for July 2014.
Well Done and Congratulations Róisín
Róisín Phelan was awarded the Tesco Homegrown player of the month for June recently, this is to add to the Evening Echo sports star of the month already won earlier in the year. Róisín was a member of the Cork Senior team who won the Tesco Homegrown National League and Munster titles so far this year. Her performance in the League final was outstanding to say the least. Playing at corner back she chased and harassed the Dublin forwards and her lightening fast solo runs out of defence were a joy to behold delivering pin point accurate passes to the forward line. Her performance in the Munster final was equally as memorable when she made the save of the season to stop a certain goal for Kerry at the end of the first half.
Despite Róisín’s extremely busy schedule with UCC (where she is a dentistry student) and Cork she still finds time for her club, Aghada, playing on the junior team and attending as many training sessions as she can no matter how tired she is and also coaches when time allows.
Congratulations to Róisín and her family on being named Tesco Homegrown player of the month for June 2014.
Róisin and her team mate Emma Farmer who also was honoured recently as the East Cork and District sports star of the month for June will line out with the Cork senior Ladies team v Mayo in the All Ireland quarter final on Saturday next August 16th in Tullamore at 6 pm Best of luck girls.
