U-21 B  Championship Final

Bride Rovers 4-8 Douglas 4-5

Venue: Watergrasshill

Date: Monday, 21st April 2014

The footballing highlight of the week was undoubtedly the U-21 B county championship final win over Douglas last Monday. We have been trying to win this for a few years and have come very close with some good teams during that time so it was a tremendous relief to finally cross the line! Douglas were the favourites of many entering the game and provided the stiff opposition that we expected. We played with the strong wind in the first half but were rocked by the concession of a penalty, which was scored, and a sin-binning in the same incident after a few minutes of the game. Despite this, we knuckled down and survived the sin-binning period relatively unscathed. However, the omens were not good at half time with the scores tied 2-4 each and facing into a strengthening wind. Nerves seemed to disappear at half time though and our players played with greater confidence in the second half. We dominated possession and picked off three points to edge in front. A goal from Elaine Culloty ten minutes from time proved priceless as it gave us a 5 point lead. Douglas countered strongly and scored a late goal of their own but we scored 2 more points to earn a win by three which sparked off great celebrations. Jennifer Barry was outstanding throughout and had few rivals for player of the match.

Well done to Bridget Forde, Niamh Barry, Meeks Carr and Eleanor Ahern who showed great judgement on the sideline, making the right calls to help us secure this win.
