Cork U-14 Girls win round one in the Munster Championship
Cork 8-20 Kerry 2-06
East Cork girls were to the fore on Saturday last as Cork U-14 Ladies started their defence of the Munster championship compressively defeating Kerry in a sun drenched Castleisland venue
Kerry playing with the aid of the breeze were first to settle and had the ball over the bar after just two minutes. Cork first score came four minutes later and after further exchanges from both sides Cork settled down and went on a scoring spree scoring five unanswered goals and several points before Kerry had the ball in the Cork net with a goal of their own. Cork tagged on another goal and a few more points to leave the score 6-11 to 1-2 at half time. The Cork management team now used the opportunity to test their bench and the replacements also did themselves proud scoring a further two goals and nine points to Kerry’s goal and four points Final score Cork 8-20 to Kerry 2-06.
East Cork had a total of nine girls on the panel Aileen McGrath (Aghada) playing at centre forward scored the opening goal and a number of points ,Fay Cahill (Cloyne) showed her experience having made her debut at this grade last season and was solid as a rock at corner back. Cliona Cronin (Watergrasshill) was outstanding at full back and just mopped up everything that came her way forcing Kerry to shoot from far out the field. Sarah Leahy (Aghada) came on after half time and slotted right into the team. Other East Cork girls on the panel are Rose Goggin (Inch Rovers), Lucy Cashman, Annaliese Murphy and Megan Smith (Glanmire), Ellen Fitzgerald (Watergrasshill),
Last year in the first round Cork came away with much the same result but when the sides met in the Munster final Kerry were a different outfit and Cork were lucky to escape with a draw. Cork did win the replay in Abbeydorney and if these sides meet again this year later in the season which is very possible we could be in for a great game.
