Aghada Ladies’ Football News

The poor weather has hit all games over the past month with our U-14 girls only playing their first match last Sunday (See separate report). At present the pitch in Rostellan is closed but hopefully the rain will stop and give every one a chance to get going.

Our U 16 girls are due to play Bride Rovers next weekend so maybe we will be able to start our season at this grade.

U-14’s Get League Campaign Off To Winning Start

Our U-14’s made the journey to Pobailscoil Trionade Youghal on Sunday last to take on Inch Rovers in our first league game. First of all credit to both teams for serving up a great game in very testing conditions and also to Pobailscoil for the use of there field probably one of  a handful that was playable over the weekend.

There was a big wind blowing into the town end goal with Inch Rovers winning the toss they opted to play with it in the first half. Our girls were putting in a massive effort against all the elements and were rewarded with a goal early on from the boot of Lauren Linehan from the penalty spot after Ayrn Quinn was upended in the square. Inch Rovers started to dominate the game now with the elements in there favor they got a goal of there own and it was backs to the wall for the Aghada girls. Damage limitation was the Aghada motto in the first half and then kick on in the second half and this is really how the game unfolded. We were to get our second goal on ten minutes this time Sarah Leahy rattled the back of the Inch Rovers net after some wonderful play from Aileen McGrath and Bridget Wall in the middle of the field. From the resultant kick out Inch Rovers went back down the field and got a goal of there own. This was quickly followed by a point to leave the score after the first quarter Aghada 2-0 Inch Rovers 2-1. We replied again with a well taken point by Lauren McAllister after some great work by Lauren Curley, Megan Sweeney and Keva O’Keeffe. Inch Rovers were to get the next three points but could have been more but for some terrific defending from Kate Stafford, Katie O’Farrell, Amy Hickman and Michelle Stafford between the sticks. We got the last score of the half to leave the halftime score line Aghada 2-2 Inch Rovers 2-5 and we were about to turn to play with the wind but then again I have yet to see the wind win a game for any team.

We had been a bit rusty in that first half but when we dusted off the cobwebs at halftime we started to play some wonderful football and hit a purple patch in the first quarter of the second half but that was before Inch Rovers got a goal of there own to lead by six points a minute into the second half. The Walsh sisters Sarah and Claire were starting to get on top in the half back line assisted by Ally Rose and started to feed the ball into the forwards who were now starting to pick off there scores.  We hit a purple patch between the 33rd and 43rd minutes with scores from Sarah Leahy, Lauren Mc Allister, Megan Sweeney, Lauren Linehan and Aileen Mc Grath to leave the score Aghada 5-8 Inch Rovers 3-5. Inch Rovers started to rally again and got a goal back but this was quickly cancelled out by Lauren Linehan. Eva Rose Boylan was now thundering into the game at half forward and got a point of her own. Sinead Condon, Adelina Corigliano, Orla Crowley, Meave Culligan were all introduced for the second half and each contributed to what was a good outing for the Aghada team winning on a score line of Aghada 6-10 Inch Rovers       4-7.
