Aghada Ladies’ Football Club Notes
What a lovely summer we have had so far (like the ones when we were young). Plenty to do and lots of time at the seaside but now we must get back to training and it resumed last Monday night for all age groups and will continue every Monday night for the rest of the season.
Our Junior Ladies put up a great performance in the East Cork Final but narrowly went down to Midleton. Well done to Ian, Reece and all the girls who were outstanding on the night. They since have qualified for the quarter final of the county championships defeating Passage but going down to Bishopstown.
We have played two games in the U 15 league but due to holidays and a large number of girls being away we were defeated in both.
Minor footballers have played three games in the league defeating Mayfield but going down to Rockbáwn and Watergrasshill hopefully we will have a full squad for the remaining games.
The semi final of the U 16 league V Fermoy takes place this Thursday Aug 15th in Fermoy throw in at 7 30 pm and we have been drawn against Glanmire in the championship.
U 10’s have two games remaining and will play St Coleman’s on Friday next the 16th in Rostellan and Bride Rovers on Monday next the 19th in Rostellan. We also have reached the semi final of the U 12 league and this should also be played sometime next week.
The U 14 Girls have drawn Fermoy in the East Cork Championship and this will be played before the end of the month.
Inter County
Following the success in the all Ireland of the Cork U 14 team and our own Christine Moran, Aileen McGrath and Sarah Leahy the Cork U 16 girls qualified for the All Ireland final on Saturday when they defeated Galway in Limerick. Our own Hannah Looney was again outstanding in this game and we look forward to the final when they play Dublin in two weeks time.
Well done to Emma Farmer who came on in the second half for the Cork senior Ladies’ team in the qualifying game against Armagh on Saturday. Well done to Roisin Phelan who is also a member of this panel.
Cork and Dublin will have another big day on August 24th when they meet in a double header the U 16 All Ireland final and Cork Senior’s Qualifier. Both these games will hopefully be on at the same venue.
Thank You
Well done and thanks to Conor Counihan who stepped down as Cork senior Football manager. Conor brought more silverware to the County than any other Cork manager with Munster titles, National leagues and the all Ireland trophy in 2010. Conor has always been a great servant to Aghada GAA and a tremendous help to our Ladies’ Football club. Thank you also to Eoin O Neill and John Murphy who were part of the back room team in the Cork set up.
Cúl Camp
The Juvenile section of Aghada GAA ran a very successful Cúl Camp in Rostellan last week. Our girls were well looked after and had some great coaches with Cork stars Orla and Emma Farmer and Hannah Looney being joined by Cassie Tynan and Amanda Bennett and others. Thanks to all who organised and helped in any way. Cork hurling star Conor Lehane celebrated his 21st birthday with us and thanks to those who put on a party for him.
Finally a great day was had on Sunday last when a large crowd from Aghada including many from the Ladies Football Club travelled with members of the Juvenile GAA section to Croke Park to support Cork Senior Hurlers and what a great win by the Rebels.
Fundraising Event
A Table Quiz will be held on Friday night next, August 16th in Rosie’s Bar, Lower Aghada. This is a major fundraising night for the club and we ask all members and friends for their support. A great night is assured and all are welcome.
Remember Rosie’s Bar Lower Aghada Friday next, Aug 16th at 9 30pm.
