Fermoy started their defense of the U-16, East Cork “A” League Title with a win over Bride Rovers. The match was played on Saturday on a very wet and windy afternoon. Both teams played some great football despite the inclement weather.
Bride Rovers started this match with great intensity. They put Fermoy under pressure from the throw in and were the better team in the early exchanges. Bride Rovers were first to register the first score of the game with a point from the boot of Elaine Culloty. However, Fermoy began to fight their way back into this game. Isobel Pyne picked off some great points Then, Abbie Scannell scored Fermoy’s first goal of the afternoon. Bride Rovers battled hard all over the field. Karen Sheehan scored a fine point for Bride Rovers midway through the first half. Grace Culloty, Karen Sheenan and Laura Quirke were most prominent out the field for Bride Rovers and put the Fermoy backs under great pressure. However, Fermoy withstood the threat with Kathryn Buckley Jessica Tonks and Grace Kelly keeping the Bride Rovers players at bay. Fermoy managed to notch up four more points before half time (Theresa O’Donoghue, Aisling Daly and Isobel Pyne). Fermoy led at the half time break.
The second half started like the first. Bride Rovers started brightly but Fermoy quickly got to grips with the game and started to put some more points on the scoreboard (Abbie Scannell Theresa Murphy). Bride Rovers responded with their first score of the second half with a well taken point by Elaine Culloty. Bride Rovers tried hard to stem the flow of Fermoy scores. Madison Parle, was keeping Bride Rovers in the game with some excellent goalkeeping. However, the match was well and truly over when Teresa Murphy scored two goals midway the second half. Fermoy managed to get two more points (Marie Bailey & Theresa O’Donoghue) before the end of the game. Bride Rovers though did not give up and finished with a flourish with a fine goal from Emma Barry before the final whistle.
Well done to both teams for braving the elements and playing a great game of football considering the bad weather conditions.
