County Title for East Cork Side
Cork County U 12-B Ladies Football Final
Aghada 2-10 Nemo Rangers 1-11
The U- 12 girls of Aghada were crowned Cork county “B” champions for 2012 on Saturday evening Sept 15th in Mayfield GAA grounds. Playing against city side Nemo Rangers, Aghada played their hearts out and came out with a famous victory.
Nemo opened the scoring in the very first minute with a good long range point but this was cancelled out when Sara Walsh pointed for Aghada in the 4th minute. The city side again took the lead with two more points before Laueran McAllister got one back for Aghada. Nemo immediately hit back with a point and a goal to leave them well ahead after 19 minutes. Aghada refused to panic and the experienced midfield pairing of Sara Leahy and Aileen McGrath began to supply good ball to the forwards and Sara Walsh hit over a couple of points just before the half time whistle to leave the score 1-4 to 0-5.
Nemo again started the better pointing from the throw in but almost from that kick out the game was tied up when player of the match Sara Walsh cut the Nemo defence open to crash the ball to the net. Aghada now grew in confidence and the half back line of Clare Walsh, Michelle Stafford and Laueran Curley began to take control and supplied great ball to the half forwards Megan Sweeney, Kiva O Keeffe and Laueran McAllister. The next ten minutes were as exciting as any All Ireland Final with the sides exchanging point for point. The Aghada full back line were under severe pressure at times but Roisin O Callaghan, Aryn Quinn and Angie Stratos were solid no doubt kept on their toes by goal keeper Adelina Corigliano. Aghada worked the ball well up the field to the inside forwards of Lauren Lenihan and Abby Sweeney and Sara Walsh and this eventually paid off when Walsh was pulled down when heading for goal. Lauren Lenihan stepped up to take the resulting penalty and as cool as you like she slotted it home to give the sea siders a four point lead. Aghada introduced a number of subs at this stage and they worked very hard to hold on to their slender lead. Nemo kept trying and tagged on two more points before referee Gene Buckley blew the final to leave Aghada with the title.
John Hickey County PRO presented the cup to the Aghada captain Sara Leahy and paid tribute to both sides who had served up a fantastic game of entertaining football.
This was a great win for Aghada the East Cork representatives and congratulations to all concerned
